Sonshine Community Services exists to help women and children transform their lives. They envision a community where women and children live safely in healthy families. Recognized as a leader in Calgary’s continuum of emergency and second stage shelters for women and children escaping domestic violence, Sonshine Centre provides long-term, secure housing, and the support needed to navigate the practical and emotional complexities of leaving an abusive home. With 24 units, Sonshine’s shelter represents one-third of Calgary’s second stage beds. It is the only women’s shelter in Alberta providing a one-year program for single women (followed by six months of counseling and support) and one of the only two in Calgary providing one year of transitional housing for women with children. Sonshine houses and serves women and children who are at high risk for injury or fatality due to domestic violence, and is an integral part of Calgary’s collaborative response to domestic violence.
